Why did you decide to study abroad?
To advance my language skills in a real setting as well as acutally experience the culture I’ve been learning about. I chose KIIS because it was a great fit. The cost was right and I knew the teachers on the program.
What surprised you most about your host country?
While a lot of people say Parisians are mean, I was really struck by their kindness. I once saw a wreck between a van and a scooter, and both men were really concerned about each other–not their vehicles. Once they realized they both were ok, they laughed, shook hands, and went their separate ways.
What was your housing like?I stayed in an international dorm so I got to meet people from all over. I now have friends in Iowa, Virginia, Australia, Hungary and even China. It was very much like a mini community within the city. We all had a lot of fun.
What is your favorite memory from abroad?
As much as I loved Paris, my favorite memory was spending a weekend in Strasbourg. It was nice to get away from the big city and experience a new side of French culture. I truly tested my French while there and created loads of perfect memories. I ended up really bonding with all the people that went on that weekend trip. I created friendships that will last my lifetime.
What’s your number one piece of advice for a student looking to do a program similar to yours?
With a program like mine, it’s very easy to get sucked into hanging out only with Americans and staying in your comfort zone. My advice is to get off the beaten path and explore. Putting myself in difficult situations always ended up being very rewarding.
